BT-R3 mediates killing of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae by Bacillus thuringiensis

The cadherin receptor, BT-R3, of Anopheles gambiae reported in this study mediates the killing action of the Cry4B mosquitocidal toxin, which was published in the 2013 April issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine. Characterization of the toxin-receptor complex will facilitate protein design for creation of new customized mosquitocidal proteins and peptide mimics that might be more effective than the natural toxins themselves and less able to bring about insect host resistance.
